At the end of
Avenida Amilcar Cabral, the main avenue of Bissau, lies this once
so majestic presidental palace. It was destroyed during the war
'98-'99 and has a big hole in the roof, bullet holes all over and
an enormous crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling and pieces
from it spread out all over the place.
It´s guarded by quite friendly security guards in civil clothes
trained on Cuba and who do not always have their eyes on the palace.

Luiz
Cabral, half brother of the PAIGC founder and leader Amilcar Cabral,
was murdered by Fula agents loyal to Portugal. He was in power until
1980 when he was overthrown in a military coup by João (Nino)
Viera (another PAIGC-member) and had to flee to Portugal. He left
behind his luxorious residence on the beatiful island of Bubaque
in Arquipélago dos Bijagós, about 60 km from the coast
of Guinea-Bissau.

The portugese
ruled the country with an iron fist. They are considered the most
ruthless bastards amongst all ruthless, european, colonizer-bastards.
When the dictator Salazar came to power in 1926 things worsened
for the guineans. However, the PAIGC finally kicked them out in
1974 making them leave this colonial governors house on Ilha de
Bubaque behind.

On the island
Bubaque, once a popular resort for rich european tourists, this
3 star ex-hotel is to be found. It was used by senegalese troops,
loyal to the corrupt goverment of Guinea-Bissau, during the most
recent war in '98-'99.
Now, one of the buildings has been squatted by a friendly local
family but the rest is decaying simply because there is no money
to renovate it.
